Our Commitment to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Students and Families

We stand on Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Country. We always begin with respect for the Traditional Owners and their Elders – past and present.

This is our promise:

We promise that every Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander student, parent and family member will:

  • Feel safe, welcome and proud of who they are every single day at CRC Sydenham.
  • Be free to speak their language, share their culture and follow their traditions.
  • Never face racism or disrespect – if it happens, we will act quickly and fairly.
  • Be listened to, valued and included in decisions that affect them.
  • Have teachers and staff who understand their story and their strengths.
  • See their flags flying, their art on the walls, and their voices in our prayers and celebrations.

We will do this by:

  • Flying the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags every day.
  • Celebrating important dates and events together that recognise ATSI cultural heritage.
  • Provide curriculum opportunities that link to the true history and culture of First Nations people.
  • All ATSI students will be identified and supported throughout their journey at the college.
  • Running meetings with families the right way – with appropriate support staff, and at times and places that work for you.
  • Provide professional development to staff to better understand and support ATSI students.
  • Checking that our ATSI students and families feel safe, happy and proud here.

This is not just words. This is our heart speaking.

We walk together on this journey of respect, listening and reconciliation.
